Tennessee Whiskey Exposed: Best, Worst, and Overrated
Is Tennessee whiskey really the best whiskey category in America — or is the hype getting ahead of the bottle? 🥃
We put some of the biggest names in Tennessee whiskey head-to-head with smaller craft distilleries to find out what actually deserves a spot on your shelf. From legendary labels like Jack Daniel’s to rising producers like Chattanooga Whiskey and Blue Note, we scored, debated, and ranked them all.
Some bottles lived up to the hype.
Some seriously surprised us.
And a few…probably shouldn’t be on your bar cart.

What We Tested
This ranking covered a wide range of Tennessee whiskey styles and production approaches, including:
- Classic Tennessee whiskey icons
- Barrel proof and bottled-in-bond releases
- Tennessee straight bourbons (without charcoal mellowing)
- Experimental finishes and specialty mash bills
- Craft distilleries pushing the category forward
Each bottle was independently scored by Ryan and Eddy on a 0–100 scale. The combined score determined where it landed among the other whiskeys on this list — which led to some heated debates and a few unexpected placements.
One Bottle Goes to the Community
One brand didn’t get ranked: Nashville Barrel Company.
With so many single barrel variations, collaborations, and store picks, ranking a single “representative” bottle didn’t feel honest. Instead, we’re letting the community decide.
If you’ve had a Nashville Barrel Company pick you loved — or one that completely missed — drop your thoughts in the video comments. Your feedback will help shape where it lands in future rankings.
Why This Video Matters
Tennessee whiskey often gets boxed into a single flavor profile or brand identity. This tasting proves just how wide the category has become — from smoky experimental malts to refined barrel proof ryes to approachable everyday sippers.
