Urban vs. Rural Bourbon Hunting: Where’s the Better Find?

If you’re serious about bourbon hunting, you’ve probably wondered:
Are the best bottles hiding in the city…or out in the country?

We put it to the test.

Ryan hit the Texas backroads to explore three small-town liquor stores, while Eddy stayed local in Austin, targeting three urban spots. From store picks to allocated bottles, we compared selection, pricing, service, and hidden gems in both settings.

📍 What We Looked For

  • Store picks and exclusive barrel selections
  • Allocated bottles (yes, they do pop up in small towns)
  • Price differences between rural and urban locations
  • Overall vibe, knowledge, and customer service

🏆 What We Found Surprising

  • Store Picks Are Everywhere: Don’t sleep on these — most stores we visited had them, and they were often better than the regular shelf stuff.
  • Allocated Bottles? Totally Random: Urban or rural, rare bottles can appear anywhere. It’s about timing, not location.
  • Ask Questions: Owners and staff were welcoming across the board. Most were passionate about bourbon and happy to chat.
  • Build Loyalty: Smaller, independent shops often take care of their regulars — think early heads-ups, reserved bottles, or even a friendly sample.
  • Prices Weren’t That Different: Each store had its own quirks, but rural ≠ cheaper across the board.

💡 Final Tip: Mix It Up

It’s absolutely worth exploring both urban and rural stores. The key? Ask questions. Build relationships. Try something new. That’s where the real wins happen.
